Water Pump Common Faults & Troubleshooting

Aug 15,2024
Malfunction Causes Solutions
1.No water discharge from the pump A. Inlet/outlet valve not opened;
   Inlet/outlet pipe blocked;
   Flow channel/impeller blocked.

B. Motor running in wrong direction;
   Motor phase loss (slow speed).

C. Suction pipe leaking air.

D. Pump not filled with liquid;
   Air trapped in pump chamber.

E. Inadequate inlet water supply;
   Excessive suction lift;
   Foot valve leaking.

F. Excessive pipeline resistance;
   Improper pump selection.
A. Inspect and remove obstructions.

B. Adjust motor position & tighten motor wiring.

C. Tighten sealing surface and bleed air.

D. Open pump top cover/air valve to bleed air.

E. Shut down for inspection & adjustment (common with tap water pipes/belt suction lift).

F. Reduce pipeline bends & reselect the pump.
2.Insufficient pump flow A. First inspect per causes of Item 1.

B. Partial blockage of pipeline/pump flow channel/impeller;
   Scale deposition
   Insufficient valve opening.

C. Low voltage.

D. Impeller wear.
A. First resolve per solutions of Item 1.

B. Remove obstructions & readjust valve opening.

C. Stabilize voltage.

D. Replace the impeller.
3.Excessive power consumption A. Operating beyond rated flow.

B. Excessive suction lift.

C. Pump bearing wear.
A. Adjust flow by closing the outlet valve slightly.

B. Reduce suction lift.

C. Replace the bearing.
4.Abnormal noise & vibration A. Unstable pipeline support.

B. Liquid mixed with gas.

C. Cavitation occurs.

D. Bearing damaged.

E. Motor overloaded & running hot.
A. Stabilize the pipeline.

B. Increase suction pressure & bleed air.

C. Reduce vacuum degree.

D. Replace the bearing.

E. Adjust per Item 5.
5.Motor overheating A. Excessive flow; overloaded operation.

B. Friction/rubbing.

C. Motor bearing damaged.

D. Inadequate voltage.
A. Close the outlet valve slightly.

B. Inspect & eliminate the issue.

C. Replace the bearing.

D. Stabilize voltage.
6.Water leakage from the pump A. Mechanical seal wear.

B. Pump body has sand holes/cracks.

C. Sealing surface uneven.

D. Mounting bolts loose.
A. Replace the mechanical seal.

B. Weld repair or replace the pump body.

C. Trim the sealing surface.

D. Tighten the bolts.
